The Issue

Request for a Traffic Safety Evaluation & Traffic-Calming Improvements

We, the residents and property owners of the Briggs neighborhood in Florence, South Carolina, are asking the City of Florence and South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) to work collaboratively to conduct a comprehensive traffic-safety and traffic-calming evaluation of our neighborhood.

Our primary areas of concern are Park Avenue, Santee Drive and Wisteria Drive, along with the immediately connected streets and intersections.

Residents have ongoing concerns regarding vehicle speeds, traffic volume and cut-through traffic, intersection safety, and the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, children, and families traveling throughout the neighborhood.

We are not requesting one predetermined solution. Instead, we respectfully ask qualified traffic-engineering professionals to evaluate these corridors using appropriate traffic data and engineering criteria and determine which evidence-based safety measures are warranted.

Potential improvements could include intersection controls, signage, pavement markings, pedestrian improvements, speed-management measures, or other traffic-calming solutions determined appropriate through professional engineering review.

We respectfully request:

A comprehensive traffic and safety evaluation of Park Avenue, Santee Drive, Wisteria Drive and immediately connected streets and intersections.

Review of vehicle speeds, traffic volume, intersection conditions, pedestrian activity, crash history, and other relevant safety factors.

Identification of appropriate traffic-calming and traffic-control measures based on the findings.

Collaboration between the City of Florence, SCDOT, and neighborhood residents to pursue reasonable safety improvements.

Our goal is simple: meaningful, evidence-based action to make our neighborhood safer before a preventable tragedy occurs.

If you live in or own property in the Briggs neighborhood, please sign to demonstrate neighborhood support for this request.
