The Issue

Growing up, I lived in a low-income household, so did some of my other friends and family.  Now I'm a Senior in high school and am about to live on my own. But I've come to a realization that there isn't affordable housing for me.

I've also come to realize that this is a problem for many others who aren't just in school, but also low-income families like mine. After some deep research, I have found that the Cathedral City/ Palm Desert area has a population of about 150,241. Out of that 52% is between the ages of 18-64 and 30% of them make under $50k in a year. That sounds like a lot right? But that is barely manageable in this area.

On average for those making under $50k a year, that means the average income per month is between $3,200 and $3,450. The average cost of housing a month for a 1-2 bedroom house is about $750 to $6,795. And when you have to make 3 times the amount of your rent, that creates a problem for a lot of people.

So with this petition I hope to spread and raise awareness on the real issues of housing issues in our valley. I hope with this information we can use some of the empty property  and lots such as the lot next to the post office off of Date Palm and create affordable housing for those who cannot afford it. Or even try and adjust the rent for open housing now so we may give those who struggle and need a home a chance to thrive.
