We acknowledge the necessity of road repairs and drainage improvements to Kahakapao Road.  However, the lack of communication between the State DLNR and user groups is alarming.  
The May 2nd road closure was only announced one week prior to the closing.  We deserve better notice from the State regarding closures of access on PUBLIC lands.

Makawao Forest Reserve isn't just a forest; it's a vital outdoor space for thousands of people. The abrupt closure of the main access road to the reserve severely impacts our ability to use one of Maui's limited biking areas.  It also impacts other groups such as equestrian and hikers.  

We ask that DLNR officials consider a compromise that allows pedestrian and bike traffic  during  the two-month road closure. We need collaborative solutions to preserve access to this valuable resource.
