Karl Bushby is a man on an extraordinary mission. For almost 28 years, he has been walking around the world. He began his epic journey in Chile in 1998 and is now approaching the final stage of his journey back to his home in Hull, England. He has 2 rules:
1: "I can't use any form of transport to advance"
2: "I can't go home until I arrive on foot"
Yet despite his determination and extraordinary perseverance, Karl now faces one final and extremely difficult challenge.
Karl has made a personal commitment to complete his journey without using public transportation such as boats, trains or aircraft. Now, as he approaches the English Channel between France and England, this commitment has created an enormous obstacle.
Swimming across the English Channel is not a viable option due to a French channel swimming ban that prohibits swimming from France to the UK, and walking through the service tunnel of the Channel Tunnel is not currently possible either due to safety and operational concerns.
Karl has already travelled approximately 50,000 kilometres using his own feet. After almost three decades of walking, it would be heartbreaking to see his journey stopped only a few kilometres from its ultimate destination.
We therefore call upon the British and French authorities, as well as the relevant organizations involved, to explore whether a safe and lawful solution can be found that would allow Karl to cross the English Channel in a way that respects the spirit of the rule he has followed throughout his expedition.
Karl Bushby's journey is more than a personal achievement. It represents extraordinary human determination — the willingness to keep going for decades in pursuit of a goal that once seemed impossible.
