Inglewood Unified School District Background

The Inglewood Unified School District (IUSD) is a public school district in Inglewood, California. IUSD is responsible for educating 7,950 students across 16 schools in Inglewood and Ladera Heights, with 99% of them being Black and Brown students. Prior to the state of California and the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) taking control of all powers vested in the IUSD Board, student enrollment was more than 50% higher. Our community has witnessed growth and investments made in developing Inglewood's infrastructure, but the opposite is the case regarding the school district.

IUSD's mission is to nurture, educate, and graduate students who are self-responsible and self-disciplined; who are creative thinkers; who master the core academic disciplines; and who are advocates for equity and social justice for self and their community. Since the state and county took over, this mission has gone unfulfilled. We refuse to sit idle while our children's education is disregarded for corporate greed and corruption.

The California Department of Education Took Control of the IUSD in 2012

For over a decade, Inglewood students have been forced to endure irreparable harm caused by poor decision making on the parts of the CA State Department of Education, LACOE, and our Legislators. From Senate Bill 533 to Assembly Bill 1840, IUSD students have been the victims of negligent hiring, incompetence, and mismanagement. Under the guidance of these agencies our students' academic proficiency and enrollment have consistently declined and no substantial improvements have been made to our school facilities. Educating our students, supporting our educators, and having an environment that is conducive to learning is not being prioritized.

Restoring Local Control is the only Option

Against the will of the Inglewood community, LACOE recently closed Warren Lane Elementary. They are now planning to close Kelso Elementary, and it is believed that Worthington Elementary and Frank D. Parent Elementary schools are next in line to be closed. LACOE has formed 2 committee's: the District's Asset Management Advisory Committee and the School Closure/Consolidation Committee. These committees were established to create an image of community participation in closing our schools. In reality, residents want to keep schools open and invest in them. We also want to end LACOE's power, authority, and control over the IUSD.

*The fight to regain local control of the Inglewood Unified School District and end the closure of IUSD schools is a joint effort comprised of a coalition of organizations and individuals such as, PCAT, Phoenix Rising, and Women of Ifa. This conglomerate is called the Inglewood Coalition for Educational Equity. We are apart of a statewide coalition called the Statewide Partnership for Local School Control.
