The PBAC decided to not recommend Orkambi for PBS listing based on the basis of cost and evidence of a substantial benefit. Orkambi is a new Cystic Fibrosis (CF) drug that treats patients who have two copies of F508del gene mutation (DDF508). 

The 96 week Orkambi trial clearly showed that lung damage was slowed by an average of 40%. Reduced lung capacity is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. This means that Orkambi is not only extending life but also improving the quality of life for people living with CF who have the DDF508 mutation.

Clinical trials showed that Orkambi improved lung function, reduced exacerbations, hospitalisation, antibiotics, diabetes and generating positive mental health outcomes. It also improved nutrition and subsequent BMI increases.

Orkambi is available in the United States and some European countries. Orkambi is a life saving drug and currently over 1000 young Australians are waiting for it to be approved on the PBS so they can start their treatments. 

There is NO CURE for Cystic Fibrosis. The Australian government needs to approve Orkambi and not put a price tag on young Australians living with Cystic Fibrosis. Everybody deserves to live life to the fullest and it would be criminal to not include life saving drugs on the PBS.
