Parliamentary Petition for Social Tariffs

Blog: What is a social tariff?

Hey guys,

There are a lot of changes going on in the energy industry, most of which I am not a fan of (Ofgem are adding more allowances to our bills again!), but there is some good going on as well.

A guy has started a new parliamentary petition calling for a social tariff to be implemented by government. I think it's a great idea, it should at least be discussed by parliament. Ofgem are adding a new allowance on 1 April to the price cap, adding around £700m additional revenue to energy suppliers, and the purpose of this is to help energy suppliers fund "debt administration" costs. That means we're paying to help energy suppliers send debt collectors to the homes of people that can't afford their energy bills...

If we're going to be paying extra money anyway, I'd rather that money went toward a social tariff that actually helps people that need it. If you agree, please do sign the petition above. If you want to learn more about the pros and cons of a social tariff, then there is a link at the top of this update to a blog post I've written on them.

If you do sign the petition, the parliamentary website will send you a link to verify your email address. Please click this link otherwise they won't count your signature toward the petition.

Thanks everyone, I'll be back tomorrow with another energy market update.
