I recently embarked on a deeply moving journey when I cared for a senior community cat who was critically ill. At the request of her regular feeder, I brought her home so she could spend her final days in a safe, familiar and loving environment. In her last few days, she was even brought back to the void deck and car park she had called home for daily walks. After a heartfelt visit with her longtime feeders, she peacefully passed away surrounded by familiarity, comfort and love.
That experience reinforced for me just how profound the emotional bonds community cats can develop with the people who care for them. These relationships are built over many years and can provide community cats with a sense of security, trust, familiarity and comfort.
Lak, a beloved community cat from Bedok Reservoir, is one such cat.
Lak was taken for wound treatment and his wound has since healed. However, he remains in the rescuer’s care and has not been returned to his longtime, dedicated feeder. His feeder is ready and willing to bring Lak indoors, providing him with a safe and loving home where he can once again be reunited with his trusted human companion and his feline bestie.
What Happened to Lak?
The circumstances surrounding Lak’s removal are deeply concerning. On the morning of 14 May 2026, Lak’s feeder was informed that a wound had been found on his belly. Arrangements were therefore made for Lak to see a veterinarian.
On the evening of 15 May 2026, a resident witnessed a trapper attempting to trap Lak. The trapper explained that he had been engaged by a rescuer and that Lak would be returned after his veterinary treatment. Concerned, the resident contacted Lak’s feeder. She immediately rushed down, but by the time she arrived, Lak and the trapper were already gone. She subsequently learned which rescuer had taken Lak.
She then contacted the rescuer to ask for an update on Lak’s injury and how he was doing. Sadly, according to the feeder, the rescuer replied that he was not obligated to provide her with updates.
Dawn, a friend of Lak's feeder, has been checking in regularly for updates on Lak. It is heartbreaking to hear Lak's feeder cry on the phone and express deep feelings of helplessness.
The central concern is that Lak was removed without the consent of his dedicated feeder, despite an existing veterinary plan and an established caregiving arrangement. He was then separated from the person who had cared for him for many years.
This abrupt separation is particularly troubling because Lak is not a cat without a caregiver. He is known and loved by residents in his community, and he has a longtime feeder who has cared for him, monitored his health and is prepared to provide him with an indoor home should the need ever arise.

Lak’s Well-being Matters
Community cats can form strong and lasting bonds with their feeders. After years of familiarity, these caregivers can become an important source of stability, food, safety and emotional comfort.
Recent photographs posted publicly by the rescuer on Facebook appear to show Lak looking thinner and less content than before. This raises important questions about his current welfare:
Is he eating well? Is he sleeping normally? Is he coping with his new environment? How is he responding to being separated from the person, environment and feline friends he has known throughout his life?
Changes in environment and routine can be stressful for animals, and prolonged stress can potentially affect their overall health and well-being.
Lak’s situation therefore deserves careful consideration not only from the perspective of his physical condition, but also his emotional well-being.
Just as the senior community cat I cared for was able to find peace in a familiar and loving environment surrounded by people she trusted, Lak deserves the opportunity to experience that same sense of safety, comfort and companionship.
Appeals Have Already Been Made
Lak’s feeder has escalated the matter to their Member of Parliament (MP), NParks, the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), and the Cat Welfare Society (CWS).
Direct appeals have also been made to the rescuer, including phone calls requesting that Lak be returned to his longtime feeder. Despite these appeals, there has been no resolution, and Lak remains in the rescuer’s care. Visitation has also reportedly been denied.
This is why we are asking the public to stand with Lak and his longtime feeder.
Under the New Cat Management Framework. The rescuer cannot adopt anymore cat after 1 Sep 2024 as he has exceeded the threshold limit of pets. So what will happen to Lak's licencing? In view of this, we urge the rescuer to return Lak to his feeder. The feeder will adopt Lak and apply the license for him.
Welfare and Statistical Concerns---There are also concerns regarding the welfare outcomes of cats housed in the current environment. High reported mortality among acquired cats. Based on data compiled from the rescuer’s public Facebook updates between January and July 2026, 10 out of 31 newly acquired cats reportedly died. This represents approximately a 32.25% mortality rate among those newly acquired cats. In addition, nine fatalities were reported among cats admitted prior to 2026.
These figures, based on publicly available posts, raise serious questions about the welfare and health outcomes of cats in the facility and warrant careful consideration when determining what environment is in Lak’s best interests.
Health risks for Lak --------------Lak is FIV-positive and is reportedly being housed in a high-density environment with numerous cats and dogs. Given his existing health status, concerns have been raised about whether the stress and conditions of such an environment could negatively affect his immune system and overall well-being.
Concerns about his condition ----Lak reportedly ate well while under the supervision of his longtime caregiver, who had cared for him for approximately a decade. However, reports indicate that he has had a poor appetite over the past three months in his current environment.
It is heartbreaking to know that a cat who was previously well cared for by someone who had known and cared for him for so many years may now be struggling in an unfamiliar environment, while his trusted caregiver is ready and waiting to take him home.
What We Are Asking For
1. Return Lak to his trusted feeder
We urge the rescuer to immediately return Lak to his longtime feeder, who is prepared to bring him indoors and provide him with a safe, stable and loving home. His feline bestie has been brought home by the feeder n waiting to be united with Lak.
2. Respect established caregivers and care arrangements
Community cat feeders who have cared for a cat for many years play an important role in that animal’s welfare. Existing medical, feeding and welfare arrangements should not be arbitrarily disrupted when a trusted caregiver is available and willing to continue providing care.
3. Prioritize Lak’s physical and emotional well-being
Lak’s welfare should come first. His health, emotional stability, familiarity, companionship and quality of life should all be taken into consideration when determining where he should live.
