"Air Pollution Kills 120,000 Filipinos Every Year"

We, the undersigned, acknowledging that lives of about seven million people around the world every year as reported by the World Health Organization are destroyed by poor air quality that causes diseases like stroke, heart disease, lung cancer and respiratory infections such as pneumonia;

Recognizing that outdoor air pollution is linked to 4.2 million fatalities while indoor air pollution is claiming 3.8 million lives yearly;

Considering that in the Philippines, about 120,000 die annually because of air pollution putting the country as second in the Asia-Pacific Region in terms of mortality rate due to household air pollution and third on outdoor air pollution;

Cognizant that particulate matter with a diameter of between 2.5 and 10 micrometers (PM10), and particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) like sulfate and black carbon can penetrate deep into the lungs or cardiovascular system;

Aware that our continued dependence on non-renewable fossil fuel for energy drives outdoor and indoor air pollution;

Emphasizing that we, as health professionals and advocates of environmental and people’s health, are responsible to defend the public from air pollution-related health risks;

Noting that we are in a position to lend our expertise to the Department of Health (DOH) Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) , Department of Transportation (DOTr), Department of Energy (DOE), and other concerned government agencies on their initiatives to address air pollution in the country;

HEREBY RESOLVE to advocate for clean air by supporting clean, renewable energy sources, encouraging policy and technology development that can prevent, remove and treat air pollutants from the environment and household levels, improving the current air quality and health monitoring systems, and promoting healthy lifestyles that can reduce carbon footprint;

To urge the government in developing a roadmap with a direction of improving air quality towards a health-based standards in sync with WHO’s guidelines in order to protect people’s health while supporting the achievement of relevant sustainable development goals; and

To actively engage with the DOH, DENR, DOTr, DOE and other government agencies on their various initiatives to address air pollution in the country.
