HEARTBREAK IN FAIRBANKS: A Domestic Violence Survivor's Desperate Plea to Rescue Her Dogs from a System That Betrays

To: The Conscience of Fairbanks, the Mayor's Office, Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Control, and Every Citizen Who Believes in Compassion
We, the undersigned, stand witness to a heart-wrenching injustice unfolding in Fairbanks, Alaska—the cruel and prolonged separation of Brittney, a survivor of unimaginable domestic violence, from her cherished dogs, Aurora, Wesson, and their five innocent puppies. This isn't just about pets; it's about the profound emotional bonds that sustain us through life's darkest storms, and the callous indifference of a system that should be a beacon of help, not a source of further trauma.

A Nightmare of Survival and Betrayal:
Imagine escaping the clutches of domestic violence, your body bruised, your spirit battered, yet clinging fiercely to hope—the hope of reuniting with your beloved animal companions. For Brittney, this hope has been repeatedly shattered by the very agency entrusted with their care.
After enduring horrific abuse and life-threatening health crises, Brittney's escape should have been her first step towards healing. Instead, it launched her into a Kafkaesque nightmare with Fairbanks Animal Control. Despite assurances of her dogs' safety in "protective custody," she was met with locked doors and stonewalling. A promised reunion, sweetened with a fleeting offer of waived fees, turned into a cruel hoax, replaced by escalating demands and bureaucratic hurdles. Even a mayoral waiver and a JUDGE'S ORDER to release her dogs were met with defiance, the shelter clinging to absurd demands while precious days turned into agonizing weeks.

This entire ordeal stemming from a dispute over proof of ownership, initially claimed by the now-incarcerated abuser (who was briefly released on bail only to be rearrested a day later in her ongoing 3 week battle), despite his clear lack of intention to rescue the dogs himself, while Brittney diligently gathered the necessary funds and met the shelter's demands, only to be repeatedly denied.

The reunion, when it finally came, was tragically short-lived. Less than a day after bringing her exhausted and traumatized dogs home, as Brittney desperately worked to create a safe haven, Animal Control snatched them away once more, this time under the guise of a "nuisance" claim—a phantom created by the very abuser she fled, a weapon wielded against her from beyond his prison bars.

Aurora, a nursing mother have been separated from her helpless puppies Solana, Astra, Luna, Maristella, and Constellation, going on 6 days, their fragile bond torn apart by a system that seems to prioritize punitive measures over compassion and common sense. Brittney, still reeling from abuse and broken bones, is forced to fight tooth and nail, facing mounting fees and a wall of bureaucratic indifference. Where is the empathy? Where is the understanding that these animals are her family, her solace in the aftermath of terror? That the very own protocol of care from FNSB Animal Control took the puppies they were caring for as Brittney is Fighting for legal ownership. They took their mother away less than a day after their release as well Brittney being denied visits with the dogs during the previous weeks.

This is Not Just an Impoundment; It's an Inhumanity.
The actions of Fairbanks Animal Control in this case are not just bureaucratic missteps; they are a betrayal of trust, a callous disregard for the well-being of a vulnerable survivor and her animals. The system has become a weapon, inflicting further trauma on someone who has already suffered immensely.

We, the Undersigned, DEMAND:

  • The IMMEDIATE and UNCONDITIONAL RETURN of Aurora and Wesson, into Brittney's loving care and 5 5 Week Old Puppies. Enough is enough. The time for excuses and obstacles is over.
  • A full and TRANSPARENT review of the Fairbanks Animal Control's handling of Brittney's case. We demand accountability for the emotional distress and unnecessary hardship inflicted upon her. the past 4 weeks dating February 24th, 2025 and ongoing with Silence from Animal Control.
  •  An IMMEDIATE overhaul of policies regarding the pets of domestic violence survivors in Fairbanks. The system must be reformed to provide support and protection, not further victimization.
  •  Compassion and empathy from ALL parties involved. Treat Brittney with the dignity and respect she deserves. Recognize the profound bond she shares with her dogs and the crucial role they play in her healing journey.

Let our collective voices rise and demand justice for Brittney and her little Alaskan Husky Family. Let Fairbanks be a community that champions compassion and stands firmly against the further victimization of survivors.

update-3/26

Despite this legal protection, Animal Control re-impounded Aurora and Wesson on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. What happened next has left Brittney and our community heartbroken and outraged:

Just six business days later, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, Aurora and Wesson were illegally adopted out – a clear violation of the 10-business-day holding period mandated by Alaska State Law.
Adding to this cruelty, Animal Control spayed and neutered Aurora and Wesson without Brittney’s knowledge or consent, a profound violation of her rights as their owner.
Animal Control was fully aware of the protective order granting Brittney ownership but chose to ignore it. They even unlinked Brittney from Aurora’s microchip.
Imagine the devastation of having your beloved companions ripped away from you, knowing you have a legal right to them, only to discover they've been given away and subjected to surgery without your permission. This is the nightmare Brittney is living.
