Hazardous roads for school children - Lings way / Crestwood Road.
The Issue
Today, 25/9/20, another incident has occurred near Woodvale primary academy since the children have returned from Lock down. A child has been hit today crossing the Lings Way road and has had to be flown to hospital.
Local councelors have been made aware of the ongoing risks with these roads but Northamptonshire County Council are unwilling to make any changes until a number of citizens voice their concerns, hence this petition.
Due to the increase in traffic in the area on these roads, and the number of children from multiple schools crossing Lings Way and Crestwood Road, I think we now require traffic calming measures to be implemented on both roads to ensure their safety.
Below are the problems I see on a daily basis and the potential solutions;
Problems:
Lings Way - 40mph is too fast next to a pedestrian path where children from multiple schools are walking and crossing on a daily basis.
Crestwood Road - The zebra crossing is routinely ignored while children are waiting to cross. The 20 MPH signage is badly positioned, making drivers are unaware of the temporary speed limit during school pick up and drop off hours.
Solutions:
Lings Way -
Reduce the speed limit to 30 mph.
Introduction of speed humps near the major crossings.
Install (extend existing) fence barriers on Lings way to ensure pedestrians are crossing at the appropriate locations.
Crestwood Road -
Amend the speed limit to 20 mph permanently in this area. Or amend the temporary signage to be more visible, coming out from Chatsworth Avenue you are unable to see the signs at all!
Change the zebra crossing on Crestwood Road to a pelican crossing.
Raise the crossing levels to a hump to slow vehicles approaching.
And lastly, if still a zebra crossing, paint double yellow lines at least 50 meters each side of the Crestwood Road crossing to ensure cars can clearly see if pedestrians are waiting to cross.
