Just a quick update. I still haven't received an official response from the Chief Executive at Chorley Hospital. Actually, we drove past the hospital today and if I'd had time, we could have popped in to see if the Changing Place room was now unlocked or at least unlockable!
Yesterday I went to visit MOSI, Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry. The staff were very welcoming when arrived and told me to ask if there was anything I needed or wanted help with during my visit. They pointed out that one of the lifts to the first floor was currently out of order but that the second one was working fine and this was easily accessible via a ramp. I had a great time viewing the exhibits, interacting with many of the experiments and demonstrations and chatting to one of the volunteers who, although was about to leave, stayed and chatted to me about the huge computer on display. I made my now obligatory visit to the disabled toilet, not to use it, but to see what space and facilities were available. Ironically perhaps, in a huge museum promoting discovery, advancement, research, development and the progress of human achievement, it says a lot that in spite of plenty of ramps, wide doors and lower, accessible displays, they don't have an accessible changing place for wheelchair users! We opened the door to the disabled toilet and although I was pleasantly surprised at how clean and fresh it was, the space was barely large enough for me to drive my wheelchair in! Once again, a fold down baby changing shelf and plenty of bars and handles, but not a facility which people like me could use. Very disappointing. Interesting too that the lifts were easily accessible themselves, but in order to get to them we had to negotiate a number of pull and push glass doors, which I couldn't have managed from my wheelchair. You'd have though that a museum of 'Science' and 'Industry' could at least install some sensor controlled sliding doors, or at least have a low level push button for wheelchair users. I mean, even my local Asda store have automatic doors! By the way, thanks ASDA Accrington for displaying my campaign poster proudly on your Community notice board in store :) I was delighted to see it when we called in yesterday.
In other news, I've been invited back to Nelson & Colne College next week to talk to some more student groups, so watch this space. Tomorrow I have an exciting day, and I'll tell you more about that next time!
Thanks for all your comments and support!
