Iowans with intellectual disabilities need your help before it's too late!!

Iowans with intellectual disabilities are in dire need of your help to keep their community based services from being slashed!!

The Iowa legislature is considering an administrative rule to cap the monthly cost of services provided to individuals with disabilities at a rate that is based on the costs of institutionalizing individuals with disabilities. This amendment would have a very REAL and very SCARY effect on our family, so we're asking for your help.

Our son Dylan was diagnosed with autism, severe intellectual disability, and Aniridia at the age of three. With these three lifetime diagnoses, we worried constantly about what life would be like for him as an adult. We just celebrated Dylan's 22nd birthday with his two roommates in his community supported home in Iowa City, where he has thrived. Dylan continues to have many challenges. He is non-verbal, has sensory imbalances, mood disturbances, self-injurious behavior, severe intellectual disability, and as many individuals with autism do, he often attempts to elope. All of these needs require around the clock supervision and care.

The proposed "cost-saving initiative" will cut approximately 1/4 of Dylan's services, essentially overnight. This massive cut will mean a cut in his support staff, day habilitation, and supported employment. Cuts like this threaten to force Dylan and many men and women like him into an institution where they would deteriorate in ways we can not even imagine. The Olmstead Act was designed to prevent segregation and institutionalization of people with disabilities, but if the Iowa legislature defunds DHS community-based programs, that is exactly what will happen.

The Iowa legislature intends to implement this measure imminently unless we send them a clear message by August 25th that they can not balance the budget on the backs of the most vulnerable Iowans. We can stop this! With enough public pressure, the Administrative Rules Committee might not approve this rule. Please help us by signing Dylan's petition for a special meeting where the public can be heard. Today you are fighting for our son. But disabilities don't discriminate. Our win today would send a clear message to the legislature that all Iowans deserve a community.
