Harrison's Law: Reform the organ donor process

The Issue

Every day, families across the world face agonizing waits for organ transplants, desperately hoping for a chance at life. My little boy Harrison is one of those waiting. He needs a liver transplant, but the reality is stark—there just aren't enough organs being donated to meet the demand.

In many cases, even when a patient has expressed their wish to be an organ donor, families are able to overrule this decision. This contradiction between the patient’s expressed wish and family consent creates unnecessary barriers and can - and does- literally mean the difference between life and death for those on transplant waiting lists.

Statistics indicate that thousands of people die each year while waiting for an organ transplant. This crisis is exacerbated by the chronic shortage of available organs. Moreover, donor registries often include individuals who have made their wishes clear, yet these wishes are not honoured due to family opposition.

We believe that a patient's wish to donate organs should be respected above all, as it not only honours their autonomy and last wishes but also enhances the possibility of saving other lives. Laws need to be revisited and reformed to ensure that if a patient is a registered organ donor, their wishes are carried out regardless of family consent.

By advocating for this change, we can increase the supply of donated organs, give hope to more families, and save lives. To do this, we need action from the government to introduce legislation that prioritises the individual’s consent over familial objections.

Join us in this critical cause. Let’s work together to ensure every willing organ donor can fulfill their wish and give others the invaluable gift of life. Please sign this petition today and help us advocate for life-saving change.
