The Difference Between Laid Off vs. Fired vs. Terminated

Dear Good People

Have you know The Difference Between Laid Off vs. Fired vs. Terminated?

Being fired means that the company ended your employment for reasons specific to you. This may also be referred to as “terminated” by some companies. Getting laid off is different, and means that the company eliminated your position for strategic or financial reasons and not through any fault of yours.

Common reasons for being fired include poor performance, violation of company policies, failure to learn the job after being hired, or failure to get along with team members. You may also hear this referred to as terminated. Most often, terminated means fired.

On the other hand, a layoff is typically something that happens to more than one person at a time and is triggered by company changes, restructuring, acquisitions, financial struggles, pivots in the business model, economic downturn, etc.

So to summarize, the key difference between getting fired/terminated vs. being laid off is:

Getting fired is an event specific to you, and is due to something within your control (work performance, communication, ability to work with the team, ability to learn the job quickly, attitude, etc.)

Whereas when you’re laid off, the position itself is eliminated, and they do not look to replace you. A layoff isn’t caused by anything specific you did.

Here’s a quick review:

Fired and terminated are typically used interchangeably and mean that the company ended your employment for reasons specific to you – whether it’s work performance, attitude, policy violations, or something else.

A layoff is when a company makes a strategic decision to eliminate your position through no fault of your own. This is often due to restructuring, acquisitions, economic downturns or financial struggles.

Layoffs are a normal part of business in many industries and can be explained in one or two sentences. All you need to say is, “I was laid off along with X other people.”

Being fired is more difficult to explain and requires a strategic approach to avoid sounding like you have ongoing issues, attitude problems, or anything that will cause problems for your future employer

With the right strategies (described throughout the article above), you can bounce back whether you were fired or laid off, and find a great job to continue your career.

What happened with Hani can't be categorized as justice :

1. She came and join with this hotel because of references from important person in Indonesia

2. She have good performance as staff even the hotel owners love her works.

3. There's a lot of political drama and workplace bullying at the hotel. If bullying persists, she may need to speak up for herself.

To date, though, the hotel operator (Geneva & Bali) has not responded. Let's be the voice of humanity not only for Bali but also for the world to control this global pandemic.

Hand in hand, we fight together against not only Human Right Violations during Covid-19 Global Pandemic but also Workplace Bullying. One minutes from all of you, mean a lot for us.
