To allow spectators at indoor school sporting events
Covid has drastically changed all of our lives in ways we could not have imagined. Thankfully, because of Canada’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic we are slowly heading toward normalcy in our community. Restaurants are open for dining, concerts have been given the green light, and even the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto is operating at FULL capacity (~50,000 people). Even though school sports have resumed, for whatever reason, the HWDSB has banned any spectators from attending any sporting events, whether indoor or outdoor. This is something that my peers and I are unable to comprehend, considering our schools have been taking proactive measures in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19; such as wearing masks, social distancing, and getting fully vaccinated. Whenever we have inquired about this odd rule, and asked why the Toronto Raptors can have a sold out crowd but we can’t even have 1 spectator, the answer we’ve been given is “Covid”, and we do not believe that is a valid answer anymore. We are at the latter end of this pandemic, and with the basketball season just around the corner I would want nothing more than to have my family members watch me compete in my last year of High School. This goes for all sports indoors and outdoors; basketball, football, soccer, etc... So if you are in Highschool and want to make a positive change or just disagree with these unethical “safety” measures, then your signature would be greatly appreciated! Good luck to all schools this season and hopefully we can make a change.
