As a parent of children within the Waterloo Catholic School Board, and close associate of individuals from the trans community, I find myself heavily invested in the current affairs of the school board. The recent proposal to remove the Pride flag and books about trans individuals from classrooms and the school's library is alarming and worrying.

Education institutions stand as a pivotal beacon of knowledge and understanding in our community. Retracting such resources not only takes away valuable information but also negatively impacts the inclusivity of the learning environment. According to a report published by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network), the availability of inclusive and supportive resources in school significantly contributes to the emotional security and academic improvement of LGBTQ+ students (GLSEN "The 2019 National School Climate Survey" 2019).

By removing the Pride flag and trans-related educational material, the school board sends a harmful message of non-acceptance and ignorance. In an ever-evolving society, it is crucial for our children to learn and understand the diverse world we inhabit. It is particularly important for individuals who identify as trans to feel seen, validated, and respected in their learning environment.

In the larger picture, overlooking this situation may pave the way for further exclusionary measures, broadening the gap of understanding and acceptance. For the sake of maintaining an inclusive, informative atmosphere that respects and appreciates diversity, we must not let this proposal pass.
