This petition emerges from personal strife. My utility bill, courtesy of Appalachian Power, spiraled from a manageable $146 per month to a massive $350 despite my primary heat source being gas, not electric power. I am also being charged for days without power, a claim the company denies despite evidence to the contrary.

It is not only my own story. There are countless other customers facing similar situations. The sudden rate hikes and deceptive billing practices by Appalachian Power is a pressing concern. Unfortunately, reasoning with their customer service proves futile, as they insist on attributing the bill hike to the cold weather, overlooking the fact that many, like myself, heat their homes with gas, or wood not electricity. 

Sadly, this is not an issue isolated to myself or the state of West Virginia. Across the United States, nearly 31.6 million Americans face energy insecurity, a predicament worsened by utility companies who engage in unsound practices (Environmental and Energy Study Institute, 2020). Emphasising on transparency and fairness in billing is not only a right, but also an essential tool against this growing predicament.

We, the people, cannot rectify this alone. We call upon regulatory bodies, legislators, and all those in positions of power to halt unjust rate hikes and unfair billing practices by utility companies like Appalachian Power. We need transparent, fair, and accurate billing that truly reflects our energy usage. It's time for accountability. Please sign and share this petition to make your voice heard.
