Halt the Use of Yondr Pouches in Schools

The Issue

This personal appeal is borne out of a practical and immediate issue - the potential of being unable to reach a loved one in an emergency because of school regulations mandating the use of Yondr pouches, not being able to say goodbye to your mother in your final moments. These pouches, designed to restrict phone usage during school hours, can hinder children's ability to communicate with their parents or guardians. Picture this common scenario - I need to contact my mother about an urgent matter, but Yondr pouches completely bar me from doing so. My only other option is to make a phone call from the office, transforming a traditionally private familial interaction into an uncomfortably public affair.

While we understand the aim to limit classroom distractions and cyberbullying, a Pew Research Center study shows that 95% of teens have access to smartphones and 45% are online almost constantly (2018). These statistics underscore the pervasive role of technology in aggregate youth experiences. Rather than suppress this, we should encourage responsible use and open channels of communication.

Some may need the yondr pouches due to constant distractions, but therefore it should be a punishment instead not a full on ban. People do need their phones, whether it be for medical conditions, mental problems/disorders, etc.

We urge our school administrators and stakeholders to reassess the strict use of Yondr pouches. Let's strive for balance between technology use and enriched learning zones without undermining the essence of student-parent connection. A potential solution could be specific periods throughout the day when students can check their phones. We believe in finding a compromise that respects both educational focus and personal communication needs. Sign this petition to support the halt of mandatory Yondr pouch usage in our Schools.
