Halt the Use of Shark Nets During Whale Season in Noosa Heads, QLD
The issue
I am a resident of beautiful Noosa Heads, QLD, Australia, and I have personally witnessed the devastating effects of our current practices on our marine life, particularly our whales. It is heartbreaking to see these majestic creatures caught and killed in shark nets during the whale season. Furthermore, these nets are not only endangering whales but also lead to a significant amount of bycatch.
An estimated 15,000 marine animals, including some species that are already endangered, become entangled and die in these nets annually across Australia (source: World Wildlife Fund Australia). Despite the Australia Marine Conservation Society warning us that fewer than 20% of entangled whales are successfully freed, these nets continue to be used under the justification of protecting beachgoers. Evidence shows that shark attacks are primarily dependent on human behaviour rather than shark populations (source: Taronga Conservation Society Australia).
It's time we prioritize the environment and the survival of the very species we are inadvertently harming. We must act now to halt the use of shark nets during the whale season in not just Noosa Heads, but across Australia. Please, sign this petition today and help protect our whales and countless other sea creatures.
