Hi all,
The green chart below is from our City-County Councilor’s weekly update (see MichaelPaulHart.com – he’s one of the good guys). The chart explains the upcoming process for data center hearings. We need people to attend two upcoming hearings at the City-County Building downtown:
1. Monday 9/8/25 – 7PM – Hearing to decide whether to “call down” two data center zoning petitions to be separately discussed by the Council at their Sept 22 meeting. There will be no discussion of the actual petitions at this meeting, just whether to call them down for discussion at the next meeting on Sept 22. This “call down” move requires approval from 13 of the 25 Councilors (simple majority) to pass. We need people to attend this meeting, but if your schedule only allows you to attend one meeting – come on Sept 22.
a. If passed – the zoning petitions will be discussed separately by the Council at its September 22 meeting
b. If not passed - Google’s zoning petitions will be approved along with a long slate of other zoning changes and the data center will be one step closer to moving forward (tax abatement vote still to come)
2. Monday 9/22/25 – 7PM – Assuming the “call-down” vote from Sept 8 passes, this will be a public hearing on Google’s two data center zoning petitions. This is the meeting where we need to “pack the house” – we need hundreds of people there in opposition to the data center. Please plan to attend this meeting and bring as many of your friends and neighbors as you can (anyone can attend, not just Franklin Township residents). The council needs to see that a lot of people are opposed to this project. Please talk with everyone you know and get them to attend with you. This is the “do or die” moment – let’s show them how widespread the opposition is to the data center. It takes a “No” vote from 3/5 of the Councilors (15 of the 25) to reject Google’s zoning petitions (see description in Councilor Hart’s information below).
What you can do to help:
1. Plan to attend one or both of the hearings listed above. We need people to attend both hearings, but if your schedule only allows one – plan to attend on September 22.
2. Talk with your friends and neighbors – get as many people as possible to attend with you on Sept 22. They don’t have to be Franklin Township residents to attend. It’s an open public meeting and we need lots of people there to show that lots of people are opposed.
3. The table below lists the City-County Councilors who have not yet publicly said whether they oppose the data center or not. Contact as many of them as you can via phone or email and encourage them to oppose the project. Tell them how it will affect you personally and also mention this is not a NIMBY issue- the effects go far beyond Franklin Township to everyone who uses AES electricity (higher rates) and Citizens Water (water supply issues). Ask them in plain language to oppose the project (i.e. “Please oppose this project”) on behalf of their district’s residents. Anyone can contact all of these Councilors, not just residents of their own districts.
Let me know if you need a ride to one of the hearings, need help drafting your e-mail to the Councilors or have questions.
Thanks all!
Julie Goldsberry
This chart depicts the process for the data center zoning petitions.
If these petitions don’t pass, Google will not be able to proceed.
The petitions were approved by the Metropolitan Development Commission (MDC) at the August 20 hearing.
Next steps will be at the City-County Council meetings on Sept 8 and 22.
