Hello GTNA! Thank you to everyone who came to the hearing on Wednesday! It was great to have so many in attendance and, while we were not successful, we sent a clear message that the community is engaged and opposed to the data center project! Do not give up! We are not done here! Google requires two things in order to move forward: 1. Zoning changes – this will be discussed by the City-County Council at 7PM on Monday, Sept 22 (assuming Councilor Michael-Paul Hart gets the petition ‘pulled down’ – every indication is that he will do this. Thank you Councilor Hart!) 2. Tax breaks – a 40 year exemption from personal property taxes for the data center has been recommended but not yet approved by the City-County Council. More details later on when this meeting will be. What you can do now: 1. Save the date – Monday, Sept 22 at 7PM at the City-County Building. Please plan to attend. We need all hands on deck! 2. Talk with your neighbors: a. Let them know about the 9/22 hearing. Work out carpooling arrangements for those who are unable to drive themselves. b. If neighbors are on the fence or even in favor of the data center, direct them to ProtectFT’s website (ProtectFT.com) or Facebook page. Another good resource is Citizens Action Coalition’s website (citact.org). Do they understand that there will be a 10-year construction period, only 50 jobs created, noise and light pollution (noise limitation commitments do not exist during construction or when generators are in use), and large tax abatements/exemptions for Google. There is nothing good in this project for the local community. Even the payment in lieu of taxes that Google has committed to is not guaranteed to go to FT schools. 3. Talk with anyone who lives in Marion County: a. Let them know about the 9/22 hearing. We need as many people as possible to be there! b. The negative effects from this project will not be limited to Franklin Township: i. 2-3 MILLION gallons of water per day coming from Citizens Water – we don’t know where Citizens will get the water. Could be Geist or any of Citizen’s current reservoirs – all Citizen’s Water customers should be concerned about losing water availability and future rate hikes. Citizens is also providing water for a large boondoggle in Lebanon – where are they suddenly getting all this water? ii. Rate hikes for electricity. Google will pay for electric infrastructure onsite – but AES is proposing new power plants elsewhere in Indiana because of data-center needs. Regular ratepayers (that’s us - all AES customers) will fund those for Google. iii. Pollution. Google assures us that their diesel fuel will not spill and they can handle it if their lithium batteries catch on fire. If those things happen, the pollution will spread far beyond the immediate neighborhood. Thank you everyone for all your support! One good thing from this process for me has been meeting so many of my neighbors – you have been a blessing! Take care, Julie Goldsberry VP – Greater Troy Neighborhood Association
