Halt the Knighthood of Tim Martin, Prominent Brexiteer and Founder of Wetherspoons

Halt the Knighthood of Tim Martin, Prominent Brexiteer and Founder of Wetherspoons
The Issue
I am one among millions and millions of UK citizens who have suffered economic and personal damage from our decision to leave the EU. The impact has been profound, affecting livelihoods in ways many predicted but could not have imagined happening in our lifetime. It is against this backdrop that I voice my concern over the proposed knighthood of Tim Martin, a staunch Brexiteer and founder of Wetherspoons.
Mr Martin is and has been a very prominent vocal advocate for Brexit, using his platform as head of one of Britain's largest pub chains to promote leaving the EU - a decision that has resulted in significant economic, political and social fallout. According to Bank of England estimates, Brexit has cost Britain nearly 2% in lost GDP growth (source: Bank of England). This equates to around £40 billion per year or £800 million per week since the referendum.
Furthermore, Mr Martin's company Wetherspoons itself faced financial challenges post-Brexit due to increased costs and supply chain disruptions. Yet he continues to champion a cause that is causing tangible harm to so many British citizens.
Knighthoods should be reserved for individuals who contribute positively towards society; those whose actions inspire others and make our country better for everyone living within it. Bestowing such an honour on Mr Martin would send a message that disregards the hardships experienced by those negatively affected by Brexit.
Please join me in calling on the UK Honours Committee to not only consider an individual's achievements but also their wider impact on society before awarding such prestigious honours as a knighthood.
Please sign this petition and share it with your friends and family.
NOTES:
The post-Brexit trading relationship between the UK and EU will reduce long-run productivity by 4 per cent relative to remaining in the EU.
Both exports and imports will be around 15 per cent lower in the long run than if the UK had remained in the EU.
New trade deals with non-EU countries will not have a material impact.
The red tape faced by British businesses is at a record high.
Britain’s trade openness has fallen more than has been seen in other comparable economies since Brexit.
The post-Brexit investment levels are over 30 per cent lower than the pre-referendum trend.
Britain’s overall economic performance today is worse than forecast before and after the 2016 referendum.
137 potential social impacts across equalities groups have been studied, including the loss of legal rights, employment protections, funding opportunities, healthcare rights, and impacts on food, fuel and medicines.
