Begun just a few short weeks ago in July, our petition against the construction and use of the migrant detention center in the Everglades has now grown to 641 signatures — and counting. Because of you, this effort is growing faster than any of us anticipated.
But now, we must double our efforts.
According to an article published this week by the Associated Press, deportation flights have already begun from the facility, with about 100 people flown out, and more flights expected soon. Governor DeSantis proudly confirmed that the number of deportations will “go up dramatically.”
Alligator Alcatraz holds about 2,000 people, and there are plans to double its capacity. Located deep in the Everglades and surrounded by barbed wire, security cameras, pythons, and alligators, it was intentionally built to be remote, intimidating, and inhumane. An adjacent runway now allows for rapid deportation flights.
This is not just a policy. This is a crisis of conscience.
We are not helpless, and we are not alone. Religious leaders, environmental advocates, legal experts, and everyday people from all walks of life have spoken out. If you haven’t already, please take a moment to share the petition.
Remind your friends and communities that this is not about politics; it is about human decency and kindness.
Let’s keep the momentum going. Let’s keep raising our voices.
