The Issue

I am a resident of Gorleston-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, and like many others, I use our local car park Brush quay/ Riverside carpark daily. This space is more than just a place to leave our vehicles; it's an integral part of our community life. However, recent plans by the council to impose charges on this car park threaten to disrupt this harmony.

The proposed charges will not only burden us financially but also affect local businesses that rely on customers who use these parking facilities. According to data from the British Parking Association, towns that have implemented similar measures have seen a decrease in high street footfall by up to 20%. This could potentially lead to business closures and job losses in an area where unemployment rates are already above the national average.

Moreover, such charges may discourage visitors from coming into our town which would be detrimental for tourism - one of Great Yarmouth's main income sources. The Visit Britain survey shows that easy access and free parking are among top considerations for domestic tourists when choosing their destination.

We understand the council’s need for revenue generation but believe there must be other ways without causing such disruption and potential harm. We urge them instead to consider alternative methods of raising funds or cutting costs that won't negatively impact residents or businesses.

Please join me in urging the council to reconsider their decision about imposing parking fees at local carparks in Gorleston-on-Sea. Your signature can make a difference – sign this petition today!
