The Issue

My husband and I have made Shelbyville, Indiana our cherished home. Though we don't have family ties here, our commitment to the community's well-being is profoundly personal. We have watched with concern as plans for the annexation and rezoning of 429 acres of land on the east side of Shelbyville, currently owned by Lorm LLC and Alisha Clay, threaten the character and safety of our beloved town.

The proposed development area lies along State Road 44, just east of Interstate 74, a region currently offering Shelbyville's residents a peaceful, rural environment. This annexation and rezoning would not only alter the landscape but could also lead to increased traffic congestion, strain local infrastructure, and impinge on the quality of life of current residents. The pressure on our community’s resources could lead to longer emergency response times and diminish the tranquil nature that drew us here in the first place.

Moreover, the development comes with environmental uncertainties, as the sprawling urbanization may disrupt wildlife habitats and local ecosystems. Residents are already witnessing shifts in the area's natural balance; further industrial and residential development could exacerbate these environmental impacts.

This initiative seems to be prioritizing economic gains over the health and safety of our community. The transformation of this land for commercial and industrial use does not reflect the voice and interests of Shelbyville's residents who cherish our city's present charm and sense of connectedness.

We urge our local government officials to listen to their constituents and consider alternative strategies that support economic development without sacrificing the values or well-being of our community. Let's explore sustainable growth models and work together to find solutions that maintain the character and safety of Shelbyville.

I urge you, as residents who feel as strongly as we do about maintaining the health, safety, and spirit of Shelbyville, to sign this petition. Let's make it clear to our city planners and officials that we stand for a better, more thoughtful approach to our town's future.
