Halt Subsidies for Parliamentary Dining Until UK Food Bank Numbers Decrease by Half

The Issue

I am deeply disheartened by what I see as the increasing reliance on food banks in the UK, a symptom of a larger moral failing by our government to secure basic necessities for so many, including the working population. To see food banks becoming the norm is disheartening and quite frankly, unacceptable. In a country so developed, it's perplexing, yet devastatingly true, that many lack access to affordable, nutritious food.

What, then, grants our elected politicians the right to subsidized meals and drinks in parliamentary dining rooms while they fail to address this crisis? As constituents continue to suffer, these subsidies are not only unwarranted but also symbolize the contrast between the privileged and those struggling to secure daily meals.

Therefore, this petition calls for the removal of the subsidy from meals and drinks purchased in parliamentary dining rooms. This should cease until such time that the number of UK food banks has halved. According to The Trussell Trust, the UK's largest food bank network, food bank use has increased by a shocking 73% in the last five years (source: The Guardian). We need to see a significant reversal of this trend before such privileges are reinstated.

Through this, we demand not only sympathy but effective actions from our political representatives, restoring dignity, hope and trust to their constituents.
End this silence. Take a stand today. Sign this petition to halt subsidies for parliamentary dining until UK food bank numbers decrease by half. Together, we can start making change happen.
