Halt South Carolina's Complete Ban on Cell Phones in K-12 Schools

The Issue

My cousin, a student at Tanglewood Middle School, narrowly avoided catastrophe in a school shooting incident in March 2022. Miraculously, he wasn't a victim, but his phone played a crucial role in keeping him and others safe. Had he not been able to alert his parents, the outcome could have been much worse. Unfortunately, similar scenarios are becoming more frequent. Since the Columbine tragedy, there have been close to 500 school shootings nationwide.

Today, we are confronted with a real and imminent danger - a proposed policy in South Carolina that seeks to utterly ban the use of mobile phones in our K-12 schools throughout the day, including all breaks. While the policy aims to minimize distractions in class, the evidence shows that much more is at stake.

Our kids' safety is paramount, and their phones have become a vital part of their safety toolkit. In the face of the increasing threat of school shootings, the phones act as vital lifelines, allowing them to touch base with their parents, inform authorities, and even coordinate action during emergencies.

We are, therefore, calling upon the South Carolina state officials to rethink this blanket ban. Instead, let's work together for a more nuanced approach that balances the necessary discipline with the inescapable importance of ready communication. Our children's safety must not be compromised. Sign this petition to prevent the total ban on cell phones in South Carolina's K-12 schools.
