On a seemingly ordinary day, January 20, 2024, I experienced a tragedy that shook my world. Living in the rural area of Metchosin, BC, Canada, I was accustomed to the presence of predators. However, on this particular day, as contractors hammered away, my neighbour shoveled her drive nearby and my six-year-old granddaughter sang and wandered about while I fixed chicken coops, I certainly did not expect a cougar attack. Nevertheless, within minutes of going into my house for lunch, one of my dwarf goats was killed by a cougar. This wasn't an attack under the cover of darkness but rather in broad daylight.

I do not blame the cougar; it is merely trying to survive as its natural habitat is destroyed due to overbuilding and poor land management practices in neighbouring Langford. The rapid urbanization has driven these animals into new territories like Metchosin where they pose threats not only to livestock but also potentially to humans.

This isn't just about one goat or even one farmer; it's about our community's safety and livelihoods being threatened by unsustainable development practices. Local farmers are suffering significant losses as their livestock fall prey to displaced predatory animals.

We need immediate action from our local government officials to halt overdevelopment and implement sustainable land management practices that consider wildlife habitats. It's time we balance progress with preservation for the sake of both human and animal residents alike.
