The issue

Our son and his friends, all living with intellectual disabilities, have found refuge and a community in a home provided by Marion City Council for many years.

This isn't just a house—it's a lifeline

Now, the council plans to sell it, threatening to shatter the lives of eight vulnerable individuals who've built a supportive family there over the past 15 years.

This home, funded by our tax funds—was meant to ensure their welfare. The council's decision threatens to upend lives, leading to potential homelessness and trauma for these citizens.

All the residents pay rent and some are working.

This decision is not just unjust; it's a betrayal of a promise to protect and support those in need.

We cannot stand by while our son and his friends face such unnecessary upheaval. Join us in demanding that Marion City Council change this decision.

Let's ensure our tax money is used rightly, preserving this home and safeguarding the well-being of those living with intellectual disabilities.

This fight concerns more than one home—it's about opposing reckless decisions affecting our community's most vulnerable members.

Please sign the petition and join us in securing a stable future for our son and his friends!

Dear supporters, I warmly welcome the personal intervention of the Premier and his personal commitment to guarantee the future of all the housemates at Abbeyfield House. The people - more than 14, 000 actually - have spoken and the Premier and his government have heard them loud and clear. But it didn't need to get to this. The lack of empathy and understanding shown by both Marion Council and Abbeyfield towards some of the most vulnerable people in our community has been nothing short of disgraceful. Actions speak louder than words - and all the rhetoric and perceived anger by Council Mayor Kris Hanna was never backed up by any supportive action towards the housemates or their families. I know all the housemates are feeling a huge sense of relief and joy on the back of the Premier’s commitment today and I wish them well for the future.
