VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA – We are now calling for Brennan Bastyovansky to resign as Vancouver Park Board commissioner for his part in approving the logging operation in spite of seven highly respected scientists saying it is unwarranted. We also believe that he gave the public incorrect information about the scope of the destruction.
Brennan specifically asked Associate Director of Urban Parks, Joe McLeod, for an explanation of TRAQ and the TRAQ data that identified trees to be removed. McLeod replied, on camera, that there was NO DATA because only a level one visual inspection occurred. However, after voting to continue the logging, having been told specifically that there was no TRAQ data and that every tree would NOT be individually assessed, Bastyovansky told City News that only 1% of trees would be removed and that they would be individually assessed. We calculate that to be 1,600 trees, which is blatantly false. Last year 8,000 trees were removed and far more are currently being logged. Here is a video that shows both what Joe McLeod told him and what Bastyovansky told reporters. Please share this link with as many people as possible.
We would like to remind Commissioner Bastyovansky of the oath that he swore when he took office. You can read that oath here. He clearly agreed to be accountable for the decisions that he makes, thus the decision to continue the logging operation and subsequently giving wrong information to the public warrants his resignation. You can email Bastyovansky at Brennan.Bastyovanszky@vancouver.ca to demand that he does the right thing.
There will be a strategy meeting Monday evening November 18th in Yaletown and we would love to see more faces. You can email info@savestanleypark.ca for the address.
We will be filing soon for a judicial review of the decisions leading to the logging operations, a new legal strategy. In order for us not to go broke trying to save Stanley Park and the trees, we are still asking for donations. Our goal is $20,000, which is a conservative estimate of what the legal bills will come to. The last few weeks brought in around $5,000, and we are incredibly grateful to those of you who have donated, but if you haven’t got around to it yet, any amount will be greatly appreciated. Click here to get to our donation page. Alternatively, you can e-transfer a donation to donate@savestanleypark.ca or mail a cheque made out to Stanley Park Preservation Society to SPPS, 400 - 333 Terminal Ave., Vancouver, BC V6A 4C1.
