We continue to build our list of expert consultants who state that this logging operation in Stanley Park makes no sense. A scientist told us yesterday:
Dead trees - once they drop their needles - are not a fire risk - if a fire occurred, there's no canopy to burn as the needles are gone after 1-3 years post tree death. From what I can tell, they've raised - not lowered - the fuel loads.
It has become clear that the cutting down of trees in Stanley Park is, at best, a destructive project premised on ignorance. The antiquated view of "forest management," which entails cutting down snags (dead trees), has been supplanted by modern science which tells us that snags are an important part of the ecosystem and are not a fire risk.
Unfortunately, the City of Vancouver has embarked upon a multi-million dollar destructive campaign premised on the old forest management model.
We are continuing our fight to get it stopped.
