To insure we are on sound scientific footing (rather than mere emotional reaction) the past few weeks have entailed researching expert opinion. We have found a diversity of vews. Some experts, particularly industry-oriented old-school foresters, beleieve cutting down dead and damaged trees is appropriate "forest management."
On the other hand, other experts--those with a more 'whole ecosystem' awareness who are familiar with more recent science beleve that not only is the health of the forest enhanced by allowing snages (standing dead trees) to remain, but they actually slow fires.
In short, we have found several credible experts who refute that wiping out almost one third of the Stanley Park forest is justifiable on any grounds.
We are working with lawyers to develop a strategy to halt the logging before more damage is done. We will announce a fundraising campaign shortly to cover professional costs.
