I am a resident of Dexter, MI, and like many others in our community, I deeply value the unique character and natural beauty of our area. A high density housing development project (The Pelham) is currently planned adjacent to our beloved Mill Creek Park and its historic Pelham bridge. This development threatens to drastically alter the "essential character of the surrounding area" (see page 360 Planned Unit Development, PUD, in our zoning ordinance).
The proposed project will increase traffic in an already congested area, posing safety risks for both vehicles and pedestrians. The addition of dense residential buildings disrupts the harmony of our park setting, introducing noise and other pollutants that could harm local wildlife and detract from visitors' experience. Moreover, this development deviates from the intended purpose of preserving natural spaces for public enjoyment.
Mill Creek Park is not just a park; it's a sanctuary for residents seeking peace amidst nature's beauty. It's where families picnic on sunny afternoons, where joggers find their rhythm alongside the babbling creek, where children discover their love for nature.
The National Recreation and Parks Association states that parks are meant to preserve natural areas "for enjoyment by current and future generations." This high-density housing project contradicts this principle by prioritizing urbanization over preservation.
We must protect what makes Dexter special – its small-town charm combined with respect for nature’s grandeur. Let us stand together against this disruptive housing development project near Mill Creek Park to ensure that we maintain balance between growth and preservation in Dexter.
Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving the integrity of Mill Creek Park area against urban encroachment.
