Haiti is not ready to accept refugees

Haiti is not ready to accept refugees
The Issue
Petition Title
“Haiti Is Not Ready: Halt Forced Returns Until Shelter & Safety Are Secured”
✅ Petition Summary
We were very disappointed that the Haitian Minister of Haitians Living Abroad, Madam Kathia Verdier did not acknowledge the current situation in Haiti and threw 500000 Haitians under the bus! Everyone knows your situation! No flights in out of the main airport! Apologize and tell the President of the United States to Renew TPS and Humanitarian Parole for Haiti
Thousands of Haitians in Haiti are currently displaced—living on the streets, in camps, and without basic services. Haiti must pause all forced returns and prioritize the well-being of its own citizens before preparing for repatriation.
🧩 Petition Statement
To: Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils‑Aimé, Minister Kathia Verdier (MHAVE), Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad, Presidential Transitional Council
We, the undersigned, call on the Haitian government to urgently recognize that:
Haiti is facing a critical internal displacement crisis, with an estimated 360,000+ Haitians sleeping in unsafe, informal camps without access to shelter, clean water, or electricity.
Forced repatriations or refugee returns cannot proceed under current conditions.
Displaced Haitians remain vulnerable to gang violence, illness, and exposure.
Infrastructure for reintegration—housing, healthcare, employment—is inadequate or nonexistent.
“Lakay se lakay” (“Home is home”) must mean safety and dignity, not desperation.
We urge Haitian leadership to enact the following:
Publicly acknowledge that Haiti is not yet ready to receive returnees.
Advocate internationally for temporary extensions such as TPS.
Redirect resources to support internally displaced populations—housing, sanitation, medical care.
Form a joint task force with diaspora, NGOs, and local leaders to develop a transparent reintegration plan for future returnees.
Until these conditions are met, we demand a moratorium on all forced returns of nationals.
