Gwinnett County Board of Education Seeks to "Opt Out" of Property Tax Inflation Cap Law
The Issue
Gwinnett County School Board Wants to Opt Out of Georgia’s Property Tax Cap!
The school system announced its intentions on Sunday, January 5, 2025, following the implementation of the new legislation on January 1, 2025.
School officials want to opt out of a property tax cap that Georgia voters approved by 63% in November. Gwinnett is the latest district trying to subvert the will of The People and allow themselves to raise taxes beyond the inflation rate.
House Bill 581, effective January 1, caps annual property value assessment increases to the rate of inflation, providing tax relief to homeowners. However, Gwinnett County Public Schools claim this could result in a revenue loss of $35 million for the 2025-26 school year, potentially exceeding $100 million over three years.
The Gwinnett County Board of Education has scheduled three public hearings to discuss opting out of House Bill 581, which limits annual increases in property value assessments for tax purposes. The hearings are set for January 16 at 6 p.m., and February 20 at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., at the Instructional Support Center in Suwanee. https://www.gcpsk12.org/news-details/~board/news-releases/post/public-hearings-scheduled-on-house-bill-581
Gwinnett County citizens are already overburdened with increasing property and school taxes. Allowing the School Board to 'opt out' of the voters' clear wishes should be firmly rejected.
If you supported capping property taxes below the rate of inflation in November, it’s essential to speak up when local government bodies attempt to subvert the will of the people.
GCPS FY2025 Total Budget is approximately 3.2 BILLION! For reference, the 2024 GCPS statistics were:
