Save Guildford's Electric Theatre - before it's too late!

This petition had 5,186 supporters

We call on Guildford Borough Council, on its leader elect, Cllr Paul Spooner and on Cllr Geoff Davis, who as chair of the working committee proposes selling it off, to think again.

If they don’t think again, this wonderful Theatre, established BY the community and FOR the community will CLOSE!

The Electric Theatre is vibrant and it is much loved. It finally opened in January 1997 following many years of campaigning by GATA (Guildford Amateur Theatre Association) who not only lobbied for its establishment, but also contributed substantial sums (in excess of £80,000) to help fund its conversion into the wonderful place it is today.

It is vital to Guildford and to the wider area, that it continues to operate as a Community Theatre, not only for the companies that founded it, but for all those who currently use and enjoy it, and for generations yet to come.

It is our Community Theatre and GUILDFORD BOROUGH COUNCIL MUST ENSURE IT REMAINS ACCESSIBLE AND AFFORDABLE FOR THE PUBLIC, FOR ALL OF US TO CONTINUE TO PERFORM THERE AND TO ENTERTAIN SO MANY!

Please sign this petition to SAVE OUR COMMUNITY THEATRE.

UPDATE

'SALE OF THE THEATRE' in this petition refers to the sale of the lease of the theatre which is a community asset. Crucially there is no requirement within the advertised lease that the theatre must remain a) as a theatre or b) available for community use, so hiring the theatre facility under those terms would always be at the discretion of whoever leases the theatre.

This petition is fully supported be GATA (Guildford Amateur Theatre Association).
