Why this petition matters

Started by Xolile Ndzoyi

We write this petition letter to bring to your attention the disheartening activity happening at the Gugulethu Graveyard in Cape Town - South Africa .  On a daily basis the community of Gugulethu witness on a daily basis the Graveyard being used as a soccer field, a washing line and many other distasteful uses not inteded for a cemetery.

The dignity of the Gugulethu Graveyard(Cemetery) is not respected at all. It appears as though officials who are supposed to manage this space, do not seem to treat it as a priority. Surely they also witness what goes on there which has been the case for a very long while now with minimal remedial action implemented to avoid history repeating itself.

We plead with the City of Cape Town - Management to consider enclosing the grave yard with brick wall or concrete walls and replacing the lockable gates. This will at least help the Security to regulate the coming and going of the people with valid reasons for visiting. They should be allow families who need to clean or are their in preparation for an unveiling of a tomb stone or an actual funeral which is what the graveyard is intended for. It also has become apparent that the fence does not work because it gets stolen hence it seems practical for a solid brick wall instead. This may restore the the dignity of the burial ground that it be used according to its designated use. We call the municipal  to act now.
