Words can’t describe how appreciative Sharona and those who support her are of everyone that has signal boosted this petition! When we first put out this petition, we were not sure what to expect. With signatures reaching nearly 5000, we couldn’t be more thankful and excited about the traction we’ve seen!
The petition has raised a lot of awareness and encouraged people to get involved. It has gained the attention of many publications including the Globe and Mail. Sharona has received very encouraging legal feedback and solidarity from a community of people that didn’t exist before this petition- and for that, we are grateful to all of you. Your signatures have brought forth stories and conversations surrounding ethics and the treatment of disabled people in the workplace.
Unfortunately, like most worthy causes, the work is never done. Our goal is to have a minimum of 5000 signees to show Gucci that this exclusion and plagiarism of a disabled person's artwork is unacceptable. This kind of disrespect can’t keep happening and changes need to be made. It is almost 2020 and its time to bring about an era of real inclusivity that includes and values disabled people.
Disability inequality spans all demographics. Although this seems like an isolated incident, it really sets a tone for how people with disabilities are treated not only in the fashion industry but also in society. Incidents like these create an air of discouragement and otherness that keeps so many capable and talented people from reaching their potential.
Gucci has yet to respond or acknowledge this growing public concern. We don’t want them to sweep this under the rug! If you have shared already we really appreciate it. Please share it again! Share her work and advocacy projects! If you haven't shared yet, please spread the word via text, email, facebook, twitter, Instagram and good old word of mouth.
We are so warmed by every one of you who signed and shared. Each one of you is making a real difference and your positivity is so motivating. We can’t wait to see where this goes- we will keep you posted!
