During my time studying nursing, there was constant reassurance that the National Health Service (NHS) was in dire need of nurses. We were informed about short staffing and the urgent demand for skilled professionals to ensure patient care doesn't suffer. However, upon completing our degrees, many of us have faced the harsh reality: the promised opportunities are far from guaranteed. Instead of stepping into roles where we can make an immediate impact, too many newly qualified nurses find themselves without jobs, struggling to stay in the field they trained so hard to enter.

The current system leaves countless newly qualified nurses displaced, often seeking employment in unrelated fields just to make ends meet. This isn’t just unfair; it's detrimental to the healthcare sector as a whole, which continues to suffer from understaffing. The government must uphold its commitment to us by implementing a Newly Qualified Scheme that guarantees job placements for freshly graduated nurses.

The evidence is clear: the NHS is struggling due to lack of staffing. Reports such as those from the Royal College of Nursing highlight that there are currently tens of thousands of nursing vacancies across the UK. Allowing qualified nurses to stagnate without employment when there’s such a pressing need is not only illogical but a disservice to both healthcare professionals and patients.

By instituting a structured program, the government can ensure newly qualified nurses quickly transition into positions within the NHS, immediately contributing to alleviating the acute shortage of staff and enhancing patient care quality. This scheme should include mentorship scheme options,  guaranteed nhs employment,  and support systems to ease the transition from academia to the professional realm.
