The Issue

My name is not important, but my story is. I am a transgender man. Like so many individuals in the LGBT community, I yearn for the freedom to live my life authentically. The safety and rights we hold dear are gravely under threat under the current political climate.

This is why I urge for the addition of multiple protections to the Michigan constitution. Firstly, the protection of our right to vote without fear of discrimination or prejudice based on our identities. Secondly, ensuring our right to pursue matrimony with the ones we love, just like our heterosexual peers. Furthermore, granting the right to legally change our names and gender markers according to self identified gender. As an extension, it's crucial for LGBT individuals to obtain passports that reflect their self identified gender markers.

We also need the guarantee of access to hormone replacement therapies (HRT) and sex reassignment procedures as parts of our intimate, personal journeys. Our HIPAA rights should always be respected, maintaining the confidentiality of our medical histories.

Lastly, we need the peace that comes with protected laws against workplace discrimination. Nobody should have to feel unsafe in their professional environment on account of their sexuality or gender identity.

LGBT Americans experience discrimination at alarmingly high rates. According to a 2017 study by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, 20% of LGBT Americans have experienced discrimination because of their sexuality or gender identity when applying for jobs. This demonstrates the urgency for increased protective measures.

For rapid action and protective measures for Michigan's LGBT community, we must call upon our representatives. We are human. We, too, deserve the same rights as everybody else. Therefore, I implore all who read this to sign this petition. Let us send a unanimous message for equal rights and protections for all Michigan residents, our rights are not up for debate.
