Guam Sign on Letter – Halt the Guam Build up plans, Rewrite the DEIS

Erica Benton started this petition to Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality Nancy Sutley and

The proposed US military expansion of Guam would be one of the largest military build-ups in recent history, causing irreversible harm to Guam's environment and costing US taxpayers an estimated $9 billion.

The Department of Defense's plan will have devastating impacts on 71 acres of coral reef, and fails to comply with the Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act.  The plan threatens the habitat of thousands of species of marine life, including endangered species such as green sea turtle, hawksbill sea turtle and spinner dolphin. The proposed build up would also increase Guam's population by 47%, depleting the islands' fresh water supply and overwhelming its wastewater treatment infrastructure.

The Environmental Protection Agency gave the proposed DoD plan the worst possible rating, calling it “inadequate” and “insufficient,” and stating that "EPA believes the action should not proceed as proposed."

Please add your name to our petition! On Earth Day, April 22, we will present it in front of the EPA District 9 Office in San Francisco, calling for:

1) A halt to the current plans for the build up;
2) A rewrite of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement that addresses socio-economic and cultural impacts on local communities, including mitigation of environmental impacts and impacts to self-determination
3) The clean up of current on- and off-base contamination caused by US military operations, before any further buildup happens.
