Save Circuit of the Americas from slashed government funding

The Issue

Circuit of the Americas is a purpose-built Formula 1 track located in Austin, Texas and is home to the only Formula 1 race in the United States.  F1 is a hugely popular international sport, drawing large crowds of fans from all over the world to the beautiful facilities created in Texas specifically for this event, and it's become a fan favorite since its inception in 2012.

However, COTA is able to hold F1 races through government funding - funding that has now been cut by Texas governor Greg Abbott.  This puts the future of COTA in jeopardy, since these cuts are significant enough to have F1's chief executive Bernie Ecclestone reconsidering a return to the venue.

Holding a Formula 1 Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas is much more than putting on a racing event: it puts Austin, Texas, and the United States as a whole on the map as a player in an international arena.  The American market is one that F1 has been struggling to break for years, and with the introduction of a circuit like COTA, it seemed as if it was finally able to gain a foothold in the United States.  Drivers, teams, and fans alike all look forward to the event due to the track layout and to Austin's incredible atmosphere.  This race serves as a hugely positive reflection on a nation that has never quite been able to compete with the likes of the United Kingdom or Belgium in terms of motorsports; cutting funds will not only negatively impact COTA, but it will be incredibly detrimental to the American Formula 1 market, and to the perception of Texas in an international arena.

Locally, this race is important. With hundreds of thousands of spectators flocking to Austin for the race weekend, local businesses thrive.  Hotels, bars, music venues, restaurants, and shops all come alive with race fans - who hail from Houston and Melbourne and everywhere in between - looking to experience a little bit of what makes Austin, Texas such an exciting, culturally rich city.  Even high profile celebrities like Matt Leblanc and Antonio Banderas have been known to attend the US GP, celebrities who may otherwise not find their way to Texas.  There's no other event in Austin that can attract such a crowd.

This isn't just about sports; this is about the reflection of an entire nation and of Texas as a whole in the global media.  There has already been an outcry against this decision by fans across the globe lamenting the potential loss of Circuit of the Americas.  Help us prove that America is still a force to be reckoned with, and that a state-of-the-art institution like COTA deserves a place on an international racing calendar!  Help us #SaveCOTA
