Do you know the story of Betty Wattenbarger? You should.
This is happy, healthy Betty on the left, and on the right in the waiting room at Pediatric Urgent Care Denton (Just4Kids), as her mom took a photo on her cell phone. It’s plain to see Betty is pale and exhausted, and her lips are noticeably blue. After examining Betty, she was found to have a temp 102.5, HR 170 bpm, and the nurse struggled to get Betty’s O2 sat to register, finally reading 88%. With O2 sats in the 80’s she was sent home with a MISDIAGNOSIS of only influenza A. Within hours, 7yr old Betty was dead of septic streptococcal pneumonia.
Her father only realized when he got the bill from the urgent care that his daughter was seen, not by a physician, but by a nurse practitioner. A nurse practitioner who owns the urgent care, unsupervised by a physician, failed to realize Betty had sepsis, pneumonia, and pulmonary failure. A nurse practitioner whose notes said her lungs were clear and didn't even bother to order an X-ray. But Betty’s parents THOUGHT their daughter was being cared for by a physician.

In the last legislative session, a bill deemed “Betty’s Law” was proposed to address the issue of transparency with respect to the delivery of healthcare- so that everyone knows if they are being treated by a physician or not. It was ultimately discarded.
So, we are writing a new BOLDER, STRONGER Betty’s Law to bring to the Texas legislature in 2023, but we have little financial support to get it done. We are being opposed by the well-funded “Goliath” AANP, American Association of Nurse Practitioners. With 5 stones (laws), we intend to get passed in the next session, we will protect the people of Texas. But, we need your donations!
