Green Classrooms, Better Futures: Require Environmental Education
Green Classrooms, Better Futures: Require Environmental Education
The Issue
For my AP Government Political Action Project, I plan to focus on increasing environmental education in schools. Many students are not fully educated on important environmental issues such as climate change, sustainability, and conservation, which limits their ability to make informed decisions and take action. As my individual action, I will create and promote an online petition urging my school district to adopt policies that require environmental education to be included in the standard curriculum. These policies could include mandating a semester-long environmental science course for graduation, integrating sustainability topics into existing subjects such as science and social studies, and requiring schools to participate in hands-on activities like recycling programs or campus clean-up initiatives. To make this realistic, the proposal would include funding solutions such as reallocating a small portion of the district’s existing budget, applying for state and federal education grants, and partnering with local environmental organizations that can provide free or low-cost resources and educational materials. I will share this petition through social media and within my school community to raise awareness and gain support. My goal is to encourage local education leaders to implement these policies and better prepare students to understand and address environmental challenges. Additionally, I may volunteer with a local organization that promotes environmental awareness or education to further support my cause. Through this project, I hope to demonstrate how student-led political action can influence education policy and create meaningful change.
