We, the cohort of UTHSCSA ABSN 2023, would love to have a graduation ceremony on the month we actually graduate: August.

Graduation should be a joyous ceremony where we celebrate all our accomplishments. The word “commencement” signifies a start or a beginning. 

Summer graduates are often made to walk either in the Spring or in the Fall. As the ABSN cohort of UTHSCSA with a 15 month program starting in May, we have no choice but to graduate in the Summer. For this reason, we believe we should have our own graduation as we did not choose our start/end date.

With the plight of COVID-19, some of us did not even get to walk the stage for undergraduate. Walking the stage in the Spring and going right back to class just defeats the purpose of having a “commencement” and to come back to walk the stage in December is not feasible for some of us as we would have to go back to our individual homes which for some, may be thousands of miles away.
