Our sister died shortly after giving childbirth, and her husband has, for no reason, decided not to let us see our nephews. It's been almost 4 years since we've had any contact with them. We send presents every holiday birthday to hopefully let them know we love them, This heartbreaking situation is not unique; many families face similar struggles when a sibling passes away. 

In Iowa, there are currently no laws that specifically grant visitation rights to uncles and aunts in the event of a sibling's death. This leaves many loving family members without any legal recourse to maintain relationships with their nieces and nephews.

Research shows that maintaining extended family connections can provide critical emotional support for children who have lost a parent (American Psychological Association). It is time for Iowa lawmakers to recognize the importance of these bonds and ensure that uncles and aunts have the right to seek visitation.
