Grant UK citizenship to adults who were brought to the UK as children
The Issue
In the United Kingdom, countless individuals who were brought into the country as children and have since grown up here, contributing to our society and culture, are being denied the most fundamental recognition of a place they call home—UK citizenship. This denial not only undermines their sense of identity but also excludes them from participating fully in the civic, social, and economic life of the nation.
These individuals often consider themselves British, having spent their formative years embracing the values, customs, and language of the UK. Yet, without citizenship, they face significant life challenges such as restrictions on pursuing higher education, securing stable employment, and accessing healthcare or other social services. They also live in constant fear of deportation to a foreign land they have little or no memory of.
Granting UK citizenship to those who entered the country as minors and have since lived here into adulthood is more than a matter of law—it is a matter of fairness, compassion, and justice. This reform would ensure that they are afforded the same rights and opportunities as their peers who were born here.
Furthermore, studies indicate that children who grow up feeling insecure about their residency status are more likely to experience adverse mental health and educational outcomes. It is inhumane and short-sighted to maintain a system that breeds such unnecessary hardship. Instead, by recognising these individuals as rightful citizens, we foster a more inclusive and integrated society, harnessing their talents and energies for the benefit of the whole community.
Many countries have enacted similar policies recognising the unique situation of children brought to their shores who grow into adulthood, thereby strengthening their social fabric. The UK should follow suit to reflect its values of equality and respect for human rights.
This is a call to action for the UK Government to amend the nationality laws to allow for the immediate citizenship of those who entered the country as children and have established their lives here. By doing so, we affirm our commitment to protect those who, by every measure except a legal technicality, are already a part of our nation.
Please join us in urging the government to make this necessary change by signing this petition. Together, we can help ensure that everyone who calls the UK home can truly belong and thrive.
