Grant TRU students two weekdays off for Thanksgiving
The Issue
Thanksgiving is a time for family, gratitude, and creating cherished memories. For those of us studying at Thompson Rivers University (TRU), the holiday often feels rushed and stressful because we aren't given adequate time to truly enjoy it with our loved ones. Currently, TRU only provides students with one weekday off, which is simply not enough time for those who wish to travel home to their families, especially for students who live far away.
Every year, countless TRU students face the same logistical challenges: limited time to travel, costly last-minute transportation options, and the emotional strain of being unable to be with family during such a meaningful holiday. Students from distant regions or provinces, like Alberta or Ontario, spend hours on the road or in the air, often unable to secure affordable tickets because they are competing with a larger public who have the full Thanksgiving break.
Furthermore, missing out on quality family time has a tangible impact on students' mental health and well-being. Studies show that family support is crucial for reducing stress and enhancing academic performance. By extending the Thanksgiving break to include two weekdays off, TRU can contribute immensely to the physical and mental wellness of its student body. This change is not just an act of compassion, but a practical solution that acknowledges the diverse and widespread TRU community.
TRU prides itself on being an institution that supports and nurtures its students. By allowing us this additional time, TRU would be demonstrating a deep commitment to our personal and academic success. It gives us the opportunity to return to our studies recharged and focused, ultimately benefiting the entire university environment.
We are asking TRU to consider making a simple yet impactful change to the academic calendar this year by granting us two weekdays off for Thanksgiving. This alteration would not only strengthen stakeholder relations but also foster a more inclusive and understanding educational experience.
Join us in urging TRU to see the value in our request. Please sign this petition to help us prioritize family and well-being during Thanksgiving, making it an accessible and fulfilling holiday for all students.
