The Issue

Athletes shouldn’t be required to complete a physical education course if they take part in 2 or more sports at Southington High School. Physical education is intended to get kids to participate in fitness activities, team oriented settings and engage with their peers. However, athletes complete these tasks almost daily by being part of sports teams that involve exercise and communicating with others.  Athletes receive enough exercise on their own and don't rely on gym classes to live an active lifestyle.

Athletes have busy schedules and have to balance sports and academics at the same time which at times can be difficult in the middle of a season. Instead, athletes can be using that class period as an extra study hall to get work done. This can reduce stress and exhaustion allowing them to get the rest their body needs to prevent injury from overuse. Many athletes go to gym exhausted, sore and stressed which can put their mental health in jeopardy.

As a result of getting rid of the graduation requirement for P.E class students physical health can improve since they aren't putting their bodies under more stress by trying to use even more of their valuable energy. Also, their mental health will improve as stress levels decrease. Being in a good mental state allows athletes to perform their best on the field and in the classroom which is ultimately helping them achieve their goal. Academic Success.

By signing this petition dual sport athletes of Southington High School will be one step closer to having a choice over their high school courses and experience.
